WA Health Minister unveils major expansion at Joondalup Health Campus

WA Health Minister Dr Kim Hames today (Thursday 8 March 2012) officially opened the new theatre block at Joondalup Health Campus – a major milestone in the $393m expansion of the hospital.
The block includes 12 operating theatres – twice as many as before – a nine-bed intensive care unit, a six-bed high dependency unit and a 10-bed coronary care unit.

“Seven of the new operating theatres will commence operation on Monday,” said Chief Executive Officer Kempton Cowan. “The remaining five new theatres will open in September when more recovery bays become available.”

The new operating theatres are among the most advanced in Australia. They include four state-of-the-art iSuites with video and touch screen technology to enable surgeons to view and capture images from inside the body while they operate.

Staff at Joondalup Health Campus have treated public patients on behalf of the WA State Government since 1996. The State Government is investing $230 million to expand facilities for public patients. Ramsay Health Care is investing an additional $163 million – it’s biggest ever investment at a single hospital site.

The redevelopment is set for completion in 2013 – under budget and ahead of schedule. When complete, there will be 650 beds across the campus including 145 beds in a new standalone private hospital.

Danny Sims, Chief Operating Officer of Ramsay Health Care, also attended the official opening.

“We are delighted with how the redevelopment of Joondalup Health Campus is progressing and it is particularly pleasing that the redevelopment to date is ahead of schedule,” he said. “We are very much looking forward to the opening of the other new facilities early next year.

“The public-private partnership at Joondalup Health Campus dates back 15 years and continues to go from strength to strength. This project is a terrific example of how the public and private sector can work together to deliver services and value for money for the public.”
