Ramsay Health Care staff praised for helping save HBF Run participant
May 01, 2015
Two emergency nurses from Joondalup Health Campus have been hailed heroes after helping save the life of a heart attack victim in this year’s HBF Run for a Reason in Perth.
Registered nurses Andrea Flannery (Duncraig) and Martina Montgomery (Joondalup), both originally from Ireland, stopped about four kilometres into the 12 kilometre course when they saw a volunteer paramedic performing CPR on a collapsed runner.
The woman, believed to be in her late 50s, stopped breathing after suffering a heart attack.
Working as a team with official volunteers, including the paramedic, the nurses performed CPR and used a defibrillator on the woman before she gained consciousness.
The woman was then taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital where she underwent treatment before being discharged some days later.
The duo went on to complete the 12 kilometre course and said they would participate in the run next year.
Both nurses said it was great to be able to assist and help save the woman’s life.
Andrea and Martina were two of 547 staff, family and friends representing Ramsay Health Care at the run in May, including 229 from Joondalup Health Campus.
