Joondalup Private Hospital & WA GynaeScope recognised as Australia’s first ‘Centre of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynaecology’

Jun 25, 2015

Joondalup Private Hospital, and by extension WA GynaeScope, have become Australia’s first designated ‘Centre of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynaecology’ (COEMIG).
The COEMIG program recognises hospitals and surgeons around the world providing exceptional minimally invasive gynaecology surgical care through “key hole” surgery.

Leading this accreditation are the founders of WA GynaeScope, Gynaecological Laparoscopic Surgeons, Santanu Baruah and Gian Urbani.

Based at Joondalup Private Hospital where its surgeons operate, WA GynaeScope is a gynaecological practice specialising in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.

WA GynaeScope Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Dr Santanu Baruah, said that earning the centre of excellence designation established WA GynaeScope and Joondalup Private Hospital’s ability to consistently deliver the safest and highest quality care.

“The COEMIG program fosters quality improvement in minimally invasive gynaecologic surgery, and participation has led our team to exceed clinical benchmarks and guidelines,” Dr Baruah said. “But most importantly our commitment to excellence improves the health and well-being of our patients.”

The benefits of becoming an accredited COEMIG include:

  • a focus on improving safety and quality of care, and lowering overall costs by reducing the patient’s length of stay and absence from work

  • information sharing about new techniques, technology and procedures between surgeons to ensure best practice.

Among the many qualifications considered by independent US based assessors were: experience of the surgical consultants, the quality of the hospital’s technology and equipment, adherence to established clinical guidelines and protocols for perioperative care, the availability and competency of the support staff and surgical team members and ongoing education for staff and patients.

Manager of Accreditation and Education, and the Senior Site Inspector at the US based Surgical Review Corporation, Teresa Leath, said doctors Santanu Baruah and Gian Urbani, and their team at Joondalup Private Hospital, proved to be “knowledgeable, professional and dedicated to providing excellent care to their minimally invasive gynaecologic surgery patients”.

“A culture of excellence was evident in all levels of the program and their achievement as the first Centre of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology in Australia is well deserved,” Ms Leath said
